Post Mortem: Cboe C2 Options Exchange Systems Issue
SCI System(s) Affected: Matching Engine
Incident Description: Systems Disruption
Due to a suspected software error, a Matching Engine supporting option classes in the range IWM-JNJA crashed at 09:30:14 ET. The system immediately initiated the failover process to the secondary instance of the affected Matching Engine, which completed at 09:31:03 ET. Shortly thereafter, the Cboe Trade Desk began investigating an issue where certain options series on the Matching Engine were not transitioning to an open state. This was determined to be the result of a software defect within the failover process to the secondary Matching Engine instance and at 10:09:49 ET the Cboe Trade Desk manually forced open all classes on the Matching Engine, which caused all previously entered orders to be cancelled back to TPHs.
TPHs Affected: 13 firms
Corrective Action: A software patch will be deployed on Thursday, May 23rd to correct the software defect in the failover process. Investigation into the root cause of the problem that caused the initial Matching Engine crash is ongoing.
